RANT: Can't we enjoy a variety of things and not be so anally retentive that we 'must always enrich our lives?'

This is a really heart-felt rant.

I happened to read the review of a book that expressed that very sentiment.
It happened to be a good book btw, based on a true event.

I'm not ranting about the review. I'm ranting about the statement with regard to 'enriching ones' life.'

PULLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to monitor what this so called 'high-minded' person watches and reads! Wouldn't you?

I bet there are newspapers in the domicile of said person the kind of which have stories about Elvis and Michael Jackson hanging out together in some remote part of the world.

People, there is nothing wrong with reading something that will not enrich your life, not change it nor will it encourage you to become a Trappist Monk or anything else as wonderful as that.

I enjoy reading all sorts of books for all sorts of reasons: to learn, to be better informed and also to be entertained.

Does entertainment mean we must only read, watch and absorb certain sorts of things? Can you imagine how boring our world would be if fun was banned?

I mean I write and research nearly all the time now and a little diversion is good.

I enjoy Shakespeare, Looney Tunes and Donald Duck.

Films like Elizabeth with Cate Blanchette are what I like as well as films like
Dr. Doolittle with Eddie Murphy.

Can't we just enjoy things for what they are?

I suspect that certain people are really rather defensive about their own abilities and make declarations that make them feel better about themselvs.

Anyway, I feel better now. As a matter of fact I think I'll go and see what comedies Sky has on tonight because you know what? I had a hard day and I want to laugh and enjoy myself.

Maybe tomorrow I'll wake up with this monumental need to ENRICH MY LIFE, meanwhile I think I'll just enjoy myself!

Bye for now!

I feel like enriching my life by reading some of Carole Gill's words. This anal-retentive person you talk about can read Norman Vincent Peale or some such pap. I'm not a sheep, needing to be told how to live.

Have a great day, my friend!

Ditto.
My work mates and I were cutting it up so much after work, and I laughed so hard--we need to have the fun stuff in order to laugh. And scary to be scared if we want. Whoever that person is must have a board up his bum. (^;
